Problem

For D&AD New Blood, Duolingo asked designers how it could reach more people. While its playful mascot and social presence are well known, fewer know about its mission to make education accessible through free courses, music, maths, and chess.

Gen Z wants to learn, but addictive algorithms make it easy to pick up their phones for a quick break and end up scrolling for hours.

Solution

While Duolingo offers an easy and fun way to learn, opening the app can still feel like sitting down to study. “Lock in with Duo” turns procrastination into an opportunity to learn. The feature acts as an app blocker, with Duo appearing every few minutes while the user scrolls. To continue, they have to complete a short exercise, making them earn every scroll. Instead of asking people to put their phones down, Duo turns wasted screen time into a chance to learn.

To keep users engaged, “Lock in with Duo” also introduces a leaderboard, with the top learner winning a free scholarship. Combining behavioural design, gamification, and Duolingo’s playful personality, the campaign turns procrastination into progress while keeping learning as accessible and engaging as scrolling.
